Here is the rundown on the different positions one can have on virtual series writing/develop crew.
Creator
Obviously, the creator is the person the idea of the series comes from. The concept is there's to claim, and most of the time, the creator runs the show on a day-to-day basis.
Showrunner
The person that runs the show, but not always the creator. For example, Eric Kripke created "Supernatural," yet he no longer holds the "showrunner" position. A showrunner leads the team, makes final decisions on storylines, characters, etc... and is the head writer.
Executive Producer
The executive producer(s) *Yes, there can be more than one* are, more or less, the second in command, under the showrunner. Everything, from character plots, major storylines and ideas for episodes is run down by them first, before going to the showrunner for approval. In many cases, they serve as one of the main writers.
Staff Writer
Writers that work on a virtual series, long term. Usually contracted to write a total of two episodes per season (varies). Staff Writers, depending on how much creative control executive producers and/or the showrunner has given them, may have say in how their given episodes pan out.
Script Editor
Script editors review every single script before they go to air on the network. They check for grammatical errors, and things of the sort; Notify writers of any obvious plot holes or mistakes that should be looked at before airing any given episode.
Producer
Producers are creative consultants. They may or may not have much say in what happens on a show, but they are there to give feedback on different ideas, and provide the rest of the crew with their own. Producers are not obligated to write episodes, but they may beta read scripts from time to time.
Freelance Writer
Writers that do not work on a virtual series, long term. Guest writers, if you will. These freelance writers, more often than not, are there to fill in for a staff writer that cannot pen their given episode due to a number of reasons. Freelance writers are given outlines/treatments for an episode, and usually follow them when writing, without having too much creative control, in regards to the direction of the series.
Casting Director
The person that suggests or decides on actors to cast for different roles in a VS. A lot of times, the casting director is also the showrunner.
Graphic Designer
The person that designs everything from posters, video promotions, and/or websites that promote and advertise a virtual series.
Not every writer needs or wants a crew for their virtual series, but just know that the option is available, and more often than not, you will find someone willing to help.
