EXCLUSIVE: Interview with Chris Davis; Chloe Grace Moretz Takes On Two Characters; Also, More Plot Details Revealed!
While "Sanctum" is still in very early stages of production, VSGuide got the opportunity to sit down with new showrunner and executive producer, Chris Davis, for a brief interview on the upcoming series. VSGuide: What made you decide to take over as showrunner?
Chris Davis: I've always loved the idea of 'The Void.' The idea of an anthology series written for and by members of the community was such a great one, so when I heard it was being canceled I knew I had to do everything I possibly could to keep the show alive. So yeah, I guess my love and interest for the project itself is what made me take it on.
VSGuide: And we understand your take on the series is a little different than what was originally pitched. Could you tell us more about that?
Chris Davis: Yes. Originally, The Void was to be a straight forward anthology series, where you'd get new stories and new characters with each passing episode, which is all well and good, but I think the change came from my own insecurities about having that kind of creative freedom. I know that sounds a bit weird, because you'd think the more freedom one has, the more likely they'll be able to come up with a finished product. For me, and a few others who were working on episodes for The Void, this was not the case. My take on the series exists more in the vein of "American Horror Story," where each season acts as its own, self-contained miniseries. That way, it's still an anthology. The writers will still be able to tell new, different stories, but I think having the structure of a miniseries will help benefit the production of episodes.
VSGuide: So far the only thing that's been revealed about the premise of the show is a setting. Is there anything more you can tell us about this season in terms of plot and/or characters?
Chris Davis: I can't say too much, because we're trying to keep some stuff hidden, at least until we come closer to the potential release date, but I can say that the plot heavily revolves around "Esther," Chloe Moretz character, or in fact, characters. That's right! She won't be playing just one character, but two. That'll be pretty interesting to develop.
VSGuide: I'm sure it will be! Anything you can tell us about the character of "Esther" and/or the second character Chloe will be portraying?
Chris Davis: Esther, although fairly young and naive, has a very open mind. She's a 'free-spirit' and prides herself on having her own thoughts, and her own beliefs, which sometimes may not be the beliefs people want or expect her to have. She's a young girl that's forced to grow up way too fast, and I think given the circumstances of the plot, that can really help her character move forward with her sanity intact. On the other hand, the second character Chloe has been set to portray is a little bit more complicated, as she's not "alive." I can't reveal too much, but I can tell you her name... Rose.
VSGuide: Interesting. We know this series has been marketed as a horror story. What types of horror can we expect to see?
Chris Davis: You're gonna see ghosts, you're gonna see demonic possession, lots of ritual sacrifices. But underneath all the paranormal happenings the series will have to offer, there's a firm psychological thriller and mystery there. I've noticed in almost everything I write, I have to include some kind of deep mystery to built up from beginning to end, and this should be no different! Myself, and my fellow producers, Amin, Carey, Brady, Jack are going to try our best to make this series something special; not just this first season, but all that follow.
VSGuide: Thank you for talking with us, Chris!
The Void Sanctum has been given a six-episode order, to potentially begin airing during Summer of 2014! What would you all say to an advanced release of the pilot for this Halloween? With the rest of the first season airing sometime in 2014. May be something I'll be able to do, depending on how fast I get this draft done.

EXCLUSIVE: Douglas Booth Joins 'Sanctum' Cast In Recurring Role!
In a sit down with VSGuide this morning, producers revealed that British actor, Douglas Booth (The Pillars of the Earth, Romeo and Juliet) has joined the "Sanctum" cast in a recurring role. The actor joins an amazing ensemble cast, which includes Max Irons, Chloe Grace Moretz, Rupert Grint, Olivia Cooke, Steven Mackintosh, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Christian Antidormi, Kaya Scodelario, Sean Bean, Bill Nighy and Maggie Smith.
The character in question is named "Warren Stratford," a young, bashful and hopelessly romantic student at Sanctum Rose Academy. He is also a member of a 'secret society' of students on campus, led by Christian Antidormi's 'Nicholas Whittemore.' When questioned about the so-called 'secret society,' producers simply replied by saying, "It's a secret."
The character is said to make his first appearance in the pilot, and will possibly appear in four of the six-episode season. When asked what the newest character brings to the plot, executive producer Chris Davis said, "Warren is a much needed sidekick here. Although he's only been written for a limited number of episodes, he will be portrayed as his own character and will be given his own unique voice and arc. That said, his character adds an extra layer to a major antagonist of the first season; Nicholas. They've been best friends for ages, and their relationship will be tested once the strange haunting begins."
"The Void: Sanctum" is still in production, with producers hoping for a Summer 2014 release. The pilot episode (entitled 'Rose') will possibly be released beforehand - October 31st, at the earliest.
