Gotham is an upcoming American television series created by Bruno Heller, based on characters appearing in and published by DC Comics, specifically those of Detective James Gordon and Bruce Wayne, who were created by Bob Kane, and others in DC's Batman franchise. The series will star Ben McKenzie as the young Gordon. The series is scheduled to premiere in the 2014–15 television season. A new recruit in Captain Sarah Essen's Gotham City Police Department, Detective James Gordon is paired with Harvey Bullock to solve one of Gotham's most high-profile cases ever: the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. During his investigation, Gordon meets the Waynes' son, Bruce, now in the care of his butler Alfred, which further compels Gordon to catch the killer. Along the way, Gordon must confront gang boss Fish Mooney, as well as many of Gotham's future villains, such as Selina Kyle and Oswald Cobblepot. Eventually, Gordon is forced to form an unlikely friendship with Bruce, one that will help shape the boy's future in becoming the Dark Knight.

I don't know about this.
I mean, I'd love a Gotham series but my biggest worry here is Bruce Wayne and the fact that it's an origin story of Gordon. The fact that the series will lead up to Bruce growing up and becoming Batman, nothing major can really happen. Who knows if half the villains will even become villains before Batman exists.
To me, the series should've gone two ways. One, with Bruce already Batman and have him and Gordon be the two leads. Or, the more daring approach, remove Batman from the equation altogether. Maybe he died or he left Gotham or Bruce never became Batman at all. The series could focus entirely on the rest of Gotham and the story wouldn't rely on Batman at all.

I'd have to agree with you here. I've heard complaints about the skepticism when they did the "same thing with Superman" in regards to Smallville, however, with Bruce Wayne being seven, and the focus being on a supporting character (Gordon), its a different playing field here. I was talking to my sister about it and I told her what I took from the trailer was that its kind of like going into an episode of TV knowing the title of it, or just seeing a movie, and a character says the title in the episode/film that makes you go "ah, they said it." It will be like that with the references and foreshadowing, but how much of that can we get before its just wasted potential? Clark learned his powers as Smallville progressed, and I think every season (especially in the earlier years) was sort of a "okay, he'll learn X-Ray vision, and super speed" then "heat vision, and super jump" like... he was still the main focus. Seeing this kid they've cast go into training, growing up, becoming Batman? I don't see that happening, or DC Comics even allowing it with their strict policies.

My biggest question is, what can they do with a young Bruce Wayne that we haven't seen before? I'm worried he's gonna be that really annoying kid that gets himself into trouble and forces Gordon to save him on a weekly basis. There's nothing else they really can do with him. And I'm more than expecting half of Gotham's villain roster to appear, hint at them become super villains later in life and then do absolutely else with them. Because it's an origin story.
And it'd be so easy to make a good Gotham series. Take the atmosphere of the Arkham games. Cast Batman, Gordon, Dent, Catwoman, Gordon's daughter, Alfred, a bunch of others. Hire some decent writers. And they'd have themselves a hit without any of the limitations of an origin story.

I'm really liking this show. Nothing groundbreaking, but it's a hell of a lot of fun to watch. My favorite characters are probably Oswald and Fish, with Gordon and Selina trailing behind them. Definitely recommend, if not for the plot than for the awesome Gotham visuals lol.
