Interview with Liz Gillies
VSGuide was able to catch up with one of the main four, Liz Gillies, playing the sarcastic and misunderstood teen, Riley Hamilton. We had a chance to ask her a few questions about the rest of Season One and what we can expect with the future of "101WTSHS".
VSGuide: So Liz, what can you tell us about Season One now that a few episodes have aired? Liz Gillies: We just wrapped Season One a few weeks ago, and all I can is that things are going to get crazy. After 1x04 [Which recently just aired this past Thursday], people we introduced to the relationship of Danny and Riley. It's nice to see such a warm and welcoming experience for them. They have a really cool relationship and it's fun being able to work with Tyler Posey. VSGuide: What can we expect from Riley going into the rest of the Season? Liz Gillies: She's going to be a bit, complicated [laughs]. Riley's story is so complex and layered, because at the flip of the switch she can be this sarcastic bitch and being mean to everyone, and then the next minute she's this girl who is broken and is afraid to be herself because of other influences in her life. VSGUIDE: Debra Messing was casted to play with your Mother. What was that like? Liz Gillies: It's amazing! Debra is such a fantastic actress. She plays Riley and Will's Mom in such a fun way. Their mother is a real piece of work, but I think it gives a kinda good insight on the Riley/Will relationship, because that is a bit strained. I know the plot with her Mother is a kinda long game, so don't expect a resolution to them so quickly. But it's done in a nice way that sets up a future plot. Also we shot a food fight scene, which was quite possibly one of the best things to shoot this season. VSGuide: Working with Anna Kendrick must be fun, and you both are very talented singers. Will there be any duets between the two of them? Liz Gillies: In a way yes and in another way no. The season ends with the Drama Kids spirits fallen and Maureen kinda comes up with this idea to do a Holiday Talent Show. But of course, nothing goes quite right with that. [Laughs] But it ends with the entire Drama Club singing a song that best sums up what the Drama Club is. VSGuide: Also Riley is said to be having scenes with a new character this season? Care to explain? Liz Gillies: Yes! I did a lot of scenes with Tristin Mays who plays the supreme bad girl, Connie Mitt. Connie is such a fun character cause she's the bad side of Riley. Connie is such a fun and witty character to play off of. VSGuide: Now one final question before we go, can you tell us if there will be a Second Season? Liz Gillies: I can neither confirm nor deny, but I know as of right now, the main four which is , Anna, Tyler, Grant and I. We will be going forward to Season Two if that ever comes to fruition. But as of right now, it's all still up in the air, but that doesn't mean it won't be happening any time soon.
There you have it folks, stick around for more interviews and script teases in the coming weeks.

We had a chance to catch up with Creator of the New Hit Series "101 Ways to Survive High School". He tells us whats to come, what inspired the series, and what is to come in the future for the show. VSGuide: Thank you for meeting with us Brian. So lets get started, "101" premiered a few weeks ago and has hit some high praises, how does that feel? Brian: It feels great! I haven't aired anything since probably like 2012 with my other show "the Path not Taken". I think it just feels so weird, and also super cool to be airing long shows like Screenwriters Paradise and Audition. VSGuide: Now, "101" is not your first show on the VPN. What can you tell us about your past shows? Brian: I think if you've been on the VPN, you've probably seen shows from me that never past a first season. VAMP was my first show ever and we don't talk about that. After that I created "the Path", which I see as one of my greatest ideas and then "The Protectors" which is that show you remember don't really want to look at it again [Laughs]. But looking back, all these shows inspired me and drove me to become a better writer and here we are. VSGuide: How did "101" come about? What lead you to create this comedy? Brian: A long time ago, I created a show called "North Shore" that was about a group of friends trying to survive High School and the way that they did that, was by joining the Drama Club. I didn't realize this until I discovered an old script, that it had "talking heads" in it where the Main Character was talking to a video diary. Now fast forward to 2014 and I just kinda wanted to do a comedy about kids in High School, but also would be a satire on High School. And I think from there I got the idea of a girl having a viral video, but that she wants to breakaway from it and become more than that. So the Drama Club story came in, and I just created whacky characters to go with it. And that's "101 Ways to Survive High School" was born. VSGuide: How much has changed from the Original plan of "101" to the current version of the show that is airing right now? Brian: I think one of the biggest changes, and I know Jack will not be happy about this, was Danny and Hayley. They were going to be a thing. Riley and Hayley were never going to be friends. There was going to be a lot of crazy filler episodes, I remember one was going to be a Senior Prank episode. There were also a BUNCH of characters that never made the final cut. So a lot has changed, but still I love what I have going on right now. VSGuide: Do you see this show expanding past one season? Brian: Oh of course! I think how I planned the show out, works perfectly. I think it would suck to have a show called "101 Ways to Survive High School" and not have 101 episodes. I have a five year plan for the show and I don't see it going beyond that. But I think the good thing with this show is, that I have so many characters that could have a potential for a spin-off. Like Maureen would be perfect for a spin-off. But I think if I have the idea, "101" will continue in some form after it's finished. But if I think the show is done, then the ending for the whole series, works out perfectly. VSGuide: Lets look at Season One, how would say that story works? Brian: With this show, I have my main four, which is Hayley, Danny, Riley, and Will. So I like to think that this is their story. I'm always looking to push them and give them these situations to work out. Like with Riley, it might seem like she's a major bitch, but she's deep and has a story behind her. Same with Will, Danny and Hayley. This is their story and I love being able to tell it. VSGuide: You also have a lot of supporting characters, are we going to learn more about them? Brian: All the Drama Kids have a story that I am just so excited to tell. You won't see all of them in Season One, but what I have planned, everyone has their own episode at some point or another because they are so diverse and different from my main characters that I'm just excited to play with them and see what their home life is like, what they do outside of Drama, and who they really are besides this title I gave them to describe their character. VSGuide: Can you give us some hints for the rest of the Season? Brian: I would say, prepare yourself. I just wrapped the last episode and it's personally one of my favorites just because of how it all happens. It's written like a Series Finale, but it also pushes the show into the next season. The cliffhanger I think will be one that no one will see coming. VSGuide: Will there be a Season Two? Brian: You'll just have to wait and see. Stay tuned for more interviews with the cast and updates on the show.

"101" Gets A Second SemesterPrepare to head back to Serenity High in Spring of 2016. It’s been confirmed that the new hit comedy “101 Ways To Survive High School” has received a second season pick up. But that’s not the only big thing being announced today. It’s been confirmed that the second season will consist of two eleven episode arcs. Brian Melanson had this to say “Going into season two, it’s really the end of Sophomore year and wrapping up the season one story”.
Returning for the second season is the entire main cast along with all the Drama Kids and a few students being promoted to the Main Cast. “The entire Drama Club is now in the main cast and they will be getting their own stories this season. Also Nellie and Izzy, along with Vincent Rock are in the main cast. It opens up a whole new way of telling stories for the Drama Kids”
As for the big story of season two, Brian said this, “The story of Season Two will be reveled in the finale and it will show how the show will progress forward. I can say this, the Mid-Season finale of Season two will be a two parter and it’s Drama Festival”. New characters will also be introduced and old characters will be returning. “Season two is a whole new structure of the show and something new, so it will feel very different as opposed to Season One.” The show is currently in production for the final three episodes of the Second Season which involve a "Breakfast Club" themed episode. The second season of “101” will premiere in Spring of 2016. And remember that "101" will return in one more week on August 27th to air the final six episodes of the season. Stay tuned for more.
