This might sound like an odd question, but I’ve noticed that some live-action shows’ episodes count in a single season varied from the norm 13-22 episodes. For example, the first season of Lost had 25 episodes. So here my question: besides the obvious (30, 40, etc), how much could/would be too many episodes for a season?
Years ago back in like the 60s/70s the episode count for some series' seasons could be anywhere from 30-40 episodes. The TV show Bewitched; their first season episode count was 36 and their second was 38, However back then not a lot of networks had breaks between episodes e.g. Christmas hiatus. Nowadays 22-25 episodes is a standard count because Actors/Actresses want bigger pay checks.
ABC FAMILY show Switched at Birth has like 32 episodes for it's first season but this is split into 2 parts Summer/Winter. I suppose you could have more episodes if it was to be split into two parts.

Actually 22-25 isn't always the standard count anymore - these days it's mainly just proceedural dramas that have such long seasons, or soapy shows, ones with fewer sets & locations & are much cheaper to mass produce.
Lost was probably the last major 'genre' TV show to run for that long before the On Demand TV revolution started to happen & TV budgets started to grow, nabbing stronger actors & delivering better scripts (sometimes). You get the odd series go to maybe 20 or 22 but they're rare now - The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Hannibal, House of Cards etc... all the critically acclaimed shows now average out at between 12-15.
Blame the global recession.

I remember when I started watching Beverly Hills 90210, the Original. Some of the seasons (especially the early ones) had episode counts into the thirties, and they hit their 200th episode only season five.
