CHARACTER FEATURETTE MEET "CATHERINE RINEHART"
With production of "Gangland" season one underway, VSGuide has decided to release a number of cast/crew interviews for the upcoming series! VSGuide was about to sit down with Melinda Clarke, who plays "Catherine Rinehart," the strict leader of the Fifteenth Precinct in New York City, in this very first character featurette for the series!
VSGUIDE: Gangland just got picked up to series, and you're playing quite an important character. First, could you tell us a bit about the show, and then about your character's role in it?
MELINDA: Sure. The show is basically about the aftermath of the American government's decision to transport all the countries criminals to an island to live out the rest of their days. Instead of just focusing on the people on that island, the show jumps back and forth between those characters and people living in our society, whether it be political figures, police officers, or just everyday citizens trying to live in this new world. It's a pretty interesting concept.
As for my character, I play a woman named Catherine Rinehart. She's the head of one of the best precincts in New York City. The Fifteenth. Catherine is a very cold, very apathetic person. Whenever she tries to show empathy toward another human being, we can always kind of tell she's trying and not actually "feeling" those emotions. But umm, we find out pretty soon that she may not have always been that way. She recently had to go through some procedures that altered her mind and body, and we find out that something might have went a little wrong.
VSGUIDE: What kind of show is Gangland? I know there's got a bit of a detective vibe going on --
MELINDA: The show is really a lot of things actually. It is detective show, so it's got that crime and mystery element to it, but there's a lot of elements of a thriller series. It takes place not too far in the future, but there are definitely some hints of science fiction thrown around here and there. Also, there's quite the "New Old West" vibe about it; especially the stuff on the island. It's all these elements put together to form something really special, and I think a lot of people will appreciate that.
VSGUIDE: What's been your favorite scene to film so far?
MELINDA: Oh wow... I think it's got to come down to my last few scenes in the pilot. The ones with John and Karth at the hospital. They really showed a different side of Catherine; one that is capable of emotion.
VSGUIDE: Could you tell us a bit about the relationships you're gonna be building over the course of the season?
MELINDA: I can really only tell you about two; the ones you've already seen in the first episode, with John and with Karth. But uhm, the relationships I have with both of those men are very similar, and their always very different. All three of us work for the police force, so we all have that one central aspect that ties us together. Catherine has known Karth for a long time. Even though he's above her station, they've developed a bit of a -- I wouldn't go so far as to call it a "friendship," but it's definitely a building work-relationship that the two have. They sort of understand each other, or like to think they do. With John -- him and Catherine have a teacher/student relationship, at least so far. Catherine's just taken him under her wing as his apprentice, and she has a lot of teach him. Whether or not they are the right things to be teaching -- that's another story. [Laughs] But uhm... the two of them learn a lot from each other actually, and it's gonna be interesting to see.
VSGUIDE: We find out that your character is a mother! What can you tell us about Catherine's relationship with her son?
MELINDA: Yes, Catherine has a 12 year old boy, and when we first meet her we have absolutely no way of thinking that she could possibly have children. Her relationship with her son, Noah, is quite hard to play actually, being a mother myself, I have that instinct. While Catherine has none of that. Or if she did, it's gone. We get the feeling that she's "playing" a mother. She loves her son out of necessity; not exactly because she does. I think deep down, of course she loves him, and the truly does want to be a good mother, but there's something about her brain that just won't allow it; and that's a really big part of her arc this season.
VSGUIDE: You play a character living in our society. If you could play another character, living on the island, who would you want to play?
MELINDA: Hmm... I think I'd like to be William. Not actually the man himself, but I like the idea of his character. That wise, honest, and honorable man, still holding onto hope for a better future, in such a hopeless environment. It's going to be interesting seeing how that part of the story unfolds, since I'm probably never going to be filming in that location.
VSGUIDE: Unless you do something bad enough to get sent to the island!
MELINDA: Well, let's hope not. I don't think my character will be very well-liked on that rock. [laughs]
VSGUIDE: [Laughs] Well, we're excited about the about the show which has been slated for a mid-2014 release! In the meantime, get caught up with the first episode here. And also get ready for more cast/crew interviews coming every week!

Such an interesting interview! Catherine was one of my favorites from the pilot, and I can't wait to learn about the accident that lead to her surgery, and her surgery itself. Also her relationships, especially with John! GAH, I JUST CAN'T WAIT OKAY?

CHARACTER FEATURETTE MEET "FRANK TILLARD"
With production of "Gangland" season one underway, VSGuide has decided to release a number of cast/crew interviews for the upcoming series! VSGuide was about to sit down with Ben Foster, who plays "Frank Tillard," one of the first criminals to be sent to the island, and second in command of the Red Suns, under WIlliam Todd, in this second character featurette for the series! VSGUIDE: So, Ben, you play a character named Frank Tillard on the show. Could you tell us a little bit about him?
BEN: Sure. Frank is a really interesting character to play. He's extremely inconsistent in terms of his personality. One moment he could be totally fine, and the next, it's like a completely different person. He's got sociopathic tendencies, along with multiple personality disorder and mild schizophrenia. So, he's a pretty intense character to portray, especially in those moments when he loses hold of himself. I would call him a little bit of a comic relief too, which is kinda strange considering everything I just described.
VSGUIDE: [laughs] We'll it sounds like playing him won't be getting old any time soon.
BEN: Definitely not. What I loved about that character from day one is that we're always discovering little facets of his personality as the show progresses. In the pilot, he's pretty chill. We haven't seen how far off the ledge he can actually go. So, I think the first time the audience gets a little taste of that, it'll be quite a shock. You won't see it coming. I promise.
VSGUIDE: One of the interesting things about the show seems to be that every character is either a criminal, or corrupt in some way; especially on the island. What's it like being on a show where everyone lives in that sort of gray area?
BEN: I love it! So many stories have been told following the heroes journey. The person who does no wrong; the person who has that black & white outlook on the world. I think one of the major reasons why this show is so intriguing to people is because we've completely flipped the ideals of a story. We're essentially a show full of bad guys; yet we do have heroes of our story. What a lot of people don't realize is that a protagonist doesn't always have to necessarily be a good person. They just have to have motivations for what their doing, and be an active part of moving the story forward. That's what the character of Marcus is. Same can be said for William, and even Frank's character gets to be in the spotlight for a little while.
VSGUIDE: That's another thing about the show. Not only the fact that there are so many morally gray characters but... the fact that there are so many characters in general. The cast is HUGE!
BEN: Yeah, it is pretty large isn't it? Umm... I think the ensemble cast lets us shift focus more than we would be able to with a smaller cast. Shows like Lost and Game of Thrones had huge ensemble casts, and they still managed to showcase each character with, more of less, equal focus. One week will focus pretty heavily on the characters off the island, and those who are will sort of be in the background, still moving their stories forward, but not at the same degree. Then the next can shift focus back onto the island. I think it's safe to say that everyone will have their moments on this show. And the story is so fast paced, it should keep the audience interested in whatever is going on.
VSGUIDE: What kinds of relationship can we expect your character to build through the first season?
BEN: I spend most of my time shooting with Jeff Bridges and Dominic Purcell. So, William and Marcus are the two main characters Frank interacts with. Frank relationship with William is really tight. They've got history on the island, and trust one another as much as they are able to. I think for Frank, William is sort of like a father figure. He's helped him keep his emotions in check, even those it's still very much a struggle for Frank to "care" about others. He tries, and that's all thanks to William. His relationship with Marcus takes an interesting turn that I can't quite share right now. But umm... they might not stay best buds for long. That's all I'll say.
VSGUIDE: Uh oh. So we've got some tension going on between you two?
BEN: Yeah. We may not see very eye-to-eye on a few things, especially when it comes to how to survive on the island. Frank is very cautious, while Marcus seems to be fueled by emotion. So, he may not like some of the positions Marcus puts him and the others in.
VSGUIDE: Interesting! Okay. My last question and I'm asking everyone this -- You play a character living in on the island. If you could play another character, living in society, who would you want to play?
BEN: That's a good question. Ummm... I might have to go with Joey McCray.
VSGUIDE: Really? Why?
BEN: He's just a really fun character to watch. He's probably one of the most intelligent, most manipulative characters on the show, right next to Nikolai. That guy is insane. [laughs] But yeah, Joey would be really cool to play.
VSGUIDE: Well, thank you Ben, for being willing to come talk with us. Good luck with the show.
BEN: Thanks, a lot! It was my pleasure.
VSGUIDE: Well, this has been another exclusive interview with the cast of theVPN's upcoming drama, "Gangland," which has been slated for a mid-2014 release! Us at VSGuide are excited for the premiere, and we know you all are too! Look out for more interviews with the cast, coming soon!

OMG! FRANK!! Ugh, I've told you a hundred of times but Frank is definitely my favorite character, based off of the pilot that is. But I have a feeling he'll stay there, I don't care if he's a sociopath! XD It's super interesting to know that he has multiple personality disorder. That should be really cool to see when the show starts airing! And no it's not weird that I can't wait until he has a total meltdown and goes batshit crazy on everyone. That will be the day. I really like his interactions with the people on the island, especially William! I will not let you turn them against one another because they are my BROTP at the moment on Gangland! LMAO! Their interactions were one of my favorite aspects of the pilot, and if they end up fighting... I won't be able to handle it and I'll just NEVER let that happen. EVAH. He can totally go all apeshit on Marcus, that'll be okay... I'm loving these character featurettes! You have to do all my favorites next or we're more than likely going to have some problems... jk jk HAHA!! But, ugh, super excited for this show and can't wait to learn more about the next character!! *coughWilliamcoughJoeycoughLorrie* BUT GOOD LUCK TO BOTH OF YA!

It should be interesting as hell to write too. I love the idea of writing a character who is sort of a loose cannon. You never know which "Frank" you're gonna get when he's in a scene. That element should be fun to read as well. I hope we do it right I'm pretty sure William and Frank's relationship will stay on solid ground, for now, at least. William already knows what kind of man he is, and he knows how to deal with him, for the most part. They have a mutual understanding with one another; something that him and Marcus just don't have. And that's where the tension there starts. But you can feel safe when it comes to Frank and William.... but you never know. It's only season one. Glad you're liking these interviews! We'll see about doing Joey next. Thanks, Brady! XD
