EXCLUSIVE: Showrunner Speaks Out About "Carol of the Mutants"! Christmas is getting ready to fall upon Manhattan, and VSGuide has sat down with series creator Aimee Nicole for some more details regarding the Outcasts'
Christmas Special. She dishes out on the story behind it and what to expect out of this extra special episode!
VSGuide: Outcasts has shown itself to be both a very character driven show, as well as an action-packed one. Can we expect that to be the case with the Christmas special?
Aimee Nicole: Absolutely. At least, for the most part. This episode is definitely a more "for fun" episode than many of the others, but it will see have the same elements you see in an average episode. Just, maybe less action.
VSGuide: What's the story behind Christmas on the Outcasts? Should we expect something stereotypical, or perhaps a play on Marvel's already-established Christmas stories? Or will it be entirely different, say, something along the lines of wannabe vikings trying to make a legendary Ice God out of Bobby?
Aimee Nicole: Definitely not the latter [laughs]. The story behind Christmas on the Outcasts is a somewhat complicated, yet fresh idea. We mixed a lot of different mythologies of Christmas together, while deriving from what Marvel has used. However, the story will be entirely unrecognizable even to fans of the comics. The only similarity is the use of "Santa Clause" and the "Anti-Clause".
VSGuide: Can you tell us a little bit about their story?
Aimee Nicole: Their story will be explained throughout the episode, and to avoid giving away spoilers I'll just say that it's something no one will have seen before, that's for sure. However, I can say that Santa's "legend" dates far before he became Santa or even Saint Nicholas and that will be detailed in the episode. [Grins] Everyone's favorite
firebird will also be mentioned briefly in this episode.
VSGuide: Producers mentioned before that Julianna Margulies would be making a guest appearance on the show as Elaine Grey. Does she have a specific place in the story, or is she just visiting because it's that time of the season? Will other mutants' families be appearing/
Aimee Nicole: Elaine Grey does have a small, but somewhat important role. It isn't something that will necessarily be "important" any time soon, but it's something that needs to be set up before hand and now is the perfect time. As for the other mutants, all but at least one mutant will have a member or two of their families visiting them during their Christmas break at the Institute.
VSGuide: And the guest stars from the VPN's new show, "Age of Heroes", what about them?
Aimee Nicole: Their appearances will be extremely brief, and more for atmosphere than actual importance. It's more like a special shout out. However, they will be interacting with Spider-Girl if not a few of the X-Men as well.
VSGuide: Are there any other tidbits you don't mind giving us before we close this up?
Aimee Nicole: Umm, [laughs] that's a good question. The kids that were featured in "Protect and Serve" could possibly be making another appearance as there are plans for Kristen to return to the orphanage. And there just
might be a kiss underneath the mistletoe.
The Christmas Special has not been given an exact date, but producers are working hard on getting it set. The Outcasts will have a return date in the next two weeks, so stay tuned for more information! Excited for the Christmas special, "Carol of the Mutants"?
