AUDITION "23 Days" had a 'calm before the storm' feel to it by returning to a state of utopia in comparison to what we've seen these characters go through in the past four seasons. While there were some questions in the air about the future and the direction of these characters, they had all seemed to escape the doom and gloom and step into a much better place. And in true Audition fashion, that had to be stripped away in one of the most heartbreaking moments at episode's end. So let's get into it!
First up, I really want to talk about Alex (and Alisha). The way this season opener was structured made it feel like there would be a returned focus on him as the main figure of the series for this season. It was nice to see his friendship with Alisha extend to new environments - a bar, where he was looking after her beautifully drunken self - and everything seemed to be perfect. Their scenes together - other than being the primary source of comedy for the episode - had the kind of chemistry that five seasons worth of development could provide and there's something so satisfying about being five seasons into a show and seeing how far they've come. I get so excited about the longevity of their friendship that I often forget to try and see it as just that and understand that there is this romance he shares with Rose, so I appreciate the focus on kind of setting the norms across the board with all characters and this being a "welcome back" of sorts. I do feel like - while Alex and Rose are completely supportive of each other and their individual dreams - there is a disconnect and it was kind of felt by Rose having that team meeting. While that's normal, it kind of had this "exclusive" vibe attached to it that pulled the two away from one another and so I'm interested to see if they can continue to be this supportive or if this is an indication of a distance eventually going to grow between them. With all of that said, the episode ended on a really heartbreaking moment where Alex opened up to Alisha about being sad and how all of this is a distraction and the part where Alisha - who didn't hear him - asks him if he said anything and he just shifts back into this happy robot broke me. That was written so well. And I think the show exploring his insecurities and his fear of not getting another role and the feeling of rejection will be such a memorable arc for Alex. I hope this is his big season because I'm so prepared for this story and this emotional journey for him that was set up in the final few episodes of last season.
On the topic of exciting stories, I really like this idea of dreams and how they can change when it came to David and Mia's role in the episode. I think that's such an important idea to explore on a show like this and I think it's something a lot of people are challenged by especially when you're so vocal and honest about what you want to do. David probably feels some defeat in being so open about wanting to be an actor and now having that dream change and I wonder - even though working at a comic book shop would be literal goals for him - if there's some questions in his head about failing or giving up. Either way, it's just something that feels very real and very authentic for his character going forward. His passion for comic books has kind of taken over and has been such a definitive aspect of his character that it makes me happy to see him fall into a direction that is more geared for who he is rather than see all the characters end up in the same career. I think this could be a very promising season for him. As for Mia, she has come so far, man. So damn far. I love how happy she seems and how thoughtful and loving and supporting she is. Thank you for not giving up on the potential of your characters no matter what role they played. Audition has the same strategy Orphan Black does in terms of it's dedication to its characters and I love you and the show for it!
Now, Rose and Robbie actually started the season off with their flawless performance of "Miss Jackson" and I feel weird mentioning them in the last few paragraphs of this review, but I have to say that I'm really excited for the development that took place for those two in this episode. Like a true season premiere should do, you've established where these characters are now and what we can see develop in the future. The idea of them forming a band opens the doors for A, more auditions (show-title-shout-out), but mostly B, new characters and new dynamics. Knowing how great you are when it comes to "character," I seriously cannot wait to see who forms this band and what new characters come into the fold!
Lastly, we have a very awkward Paula who had a dream about Michael that has her all kinds of flustered. I think it could have been totally easy for you to make that dream a reality. It could have been easy for you to start the new season with Paula in a place of "omg I have feelings for Michael, lets do something about it." Instead, you're playing into what makes Paula so great as a character, and adding little things that verge on that line of "is this friendship or is this something more" that just heightens everything in a way that makes their journey together this season look very promising. Some of the stuff Michael says in that scene is borderline proof he is in love with her but then they always fall back on this "bestie" explanation makes you fall to the door just like Paula did. At the end of the day, you've created a dynamic that works as a friendship or a relationship -- something I feel very strongly about with Alex and Alisha as well -- and I'm totally along for the ride.
Quote of the episode: "I’m dying. I’m dying. I’m dying. I’m dying. I’m dead." Purely because this was me, my reaction to this episode coming out of nowhere, my reaction reading it as it went from happy to immediate heartbreak. And plus Alisha had every great line in this episode. She was hilarious.
Overall, a really strong season opener and promising first look at what's to come. I'm really glad this episode aired out of nowhere because it ignited an excitement that was carried throughout the entire episode by all the characters in that very same vibe. This season seems to have these characters in a level of purgatory with their future and their dreams and their doubts and insecurities and I can't wait to see where they come out of it and what the future looks like for Alex and David and Rose and Robbie's band, and Paula and Micahel's relationship... I seriously cannot wait. Thank you for bringing this show back into my life.

I really wanted to start this sequence a lot more light compared to how the last one ended. I think 4.20 ended with an incredibly hopeful tone to it, especially with Alex and Alisha, and I thought it was important to express that things, no matter how the exterior may seem, aren't so easily fixable. The tagline for this sequence is "Unleash" so this was definitely the building up before all hell begins to break loose. Last year, with how big Alisha's focus on storyline were, I felt that Alex was drifting towards the background compared to everything else going on, so I really wanted to make this premiere about him and focus on the struggles he's been dealing with since the sequence four finale. Writing drunk!Alisha has been a highlight of this show for me haha, and just writing the relationship between Alex and Alisha, I feel, has really improved on how I write friendships. This sequence deals with a lot of Alex's relationship with everyone around him, specifically Alisha, so look out for some more great moments between them. I think the disconnect from Alex/Rose really stems from the fact that they're not characters dependent on one another stories. I mean, when we look at Mia, she's a supporting character for David and his story, so when she's on the show she'll more than likely be with David. Same with Rose and Robbie. Rose has her own little cast of supporting characters, so I guess that's where the slight disconnect of comes from. But there wasn't meant to be an exclusive vibe from that moment. Anyway, I really struggled with how to write that final moment between Alex and Alisha. It was really hard for me to put into words how Alex would react to Alisha hearing absolutely none of him pouring his heart and soul out and finally being honest with someone. I'm glad it worked well for you. Moving forward, we're not going to see a sad!Alex, we're really going to see the happy robot version of him, and see how long he can keep that facade going. It is a depression, and so hopefully I can portray it in an honest and truthful way that both moves the story forward and impacts the audience emotionally. David is the wildcard with dreams. The last time we saw him do anything acting related was enrolling himself in an acting class back in s1/s2, so I really wanted to explore the idea of dreams changing. He's going to be struggling with finding what he truly wants to do with his life in the next few episodes, and Mia is definitely going to be there supporting him 100%. David being in her life has made her such a nicer spirit, but I don't like the idea of her character doing a complete 180 in terms of characterization because of someone coming along and changing them, so don't expect her little feisty nature to be gone completely. And omg, I can't believe you just compared Audition to Orphan Black. So much pressure now, don't hate me if you are disappointed lol Rose and Robbie have two different ways of approaching their dream, so introducing the "audition" aspect of it was almost used as a way for them to compromise on moving forward. Now, just because the say they want to form a band doesn't mean it's going to happen. In true Audition fashion, you gotta expect the unexpected Paula/Michael has been the hardest to write so far. I'm trying extremely hard not to make this strictly a "love/crush" story that becomes cliche and immature, so planning it and writing it has been quite the challenge. I think having Paula avoid him for 20 episodes and getting into antics would be fun, but I don't want that. I want to peel back the layers of a woman having romantic feelings for someone she couldn't imagine having them for 4 weeks ago. Hopefully I can keep going with this story, and stay away from all of the negative things I just said! #MoreDrunkAlisha2K16 I'm so happy you enjoyed this premiere, Jack! Thanks so much for reviewing. Love hearing your in depth thoughts. It was sort of last minute to release this unannounced, but I thought it would work really well. Don't ask me why, haha! A lot of dreams are standing in limbo at the end of this episode, and this next string begins to piece together where they belong! Hope you enjoy them

AUDITION "Acting 102" was a nostalgia induced episode that took us all the way back to the first ever season of the series in both tone and the simplicity of two friends — Alex and Alisha — attending acting class together. We met a whole string of new and diverse characters whose unique personalities are bound to enrich the season going forward and - with any new additions to the cast - I'm excited to see who evolves in their importance to the story in the same way that Mia, and others before her have. And if the episode couldn't already captivate on the vibe that made us all fall in love with the series, we're given a nice little side-story with Michael and Paula. So let's get into it!
First up, this episode had one of the greatest openings ever. The reveal that their OG acting class was secretly a meth lab and that Ms. Carlyle was actually incredibly insane was hilarious. Humour aside, it played well into the structure of the episode, delivering a more than solid reason to look elsewhere for Alex and Alisha's return to acting class. I think anytime in the future when you have an opportunity to do something like this with an "opening" of sorts, then by all means take it. It definitely worked and was a good lead in for the main story that was being told.
Speaking of which, Alex and Alisha's arrival at the acting class was a lot of fun. Alisha's nerves throughout served as a good source of humour that came off very natural. I think its easy to push jokes, or have humour come only from plot and/or more fabricated scenarios that it was really refreshing to see how something as simple as being nervous provided us with a lot of laughs. I particularly loved her body roll during the introduction scene. I could picture it so well and that's all down to the writing. I also really liked how you introduced all these other characters. It could potentially be a little confusing at first with the sudden additions, but I think you set it up in the best way possible by throwing all the pieces on the board and letting us figure out who is the most important and/or what they will do in order for us to know them better as the season progresses. Either way, it was a creative way of showing us who these people are and their little quirks made for distinctions that I really appreciated. I'm looking forward to how much of the class we're exposed to, what dynamics will be established and develop, and what this means for this season going forward.
The other main story involved in the episode was between Michael and Paula. I really love how this dream - this fantasy - has opened up Paula's eyes to their closeness, and how a genuine, sweet moment can be turned into mixed messages. I mean, it even has me questioning if Michael is seeing Paula in the same light and has these feelings for her. So the way you're writing it is genius. It's confusing, but feels in tune with everything that has happened with them so far, and playing within that particular sandbox has been a lot of fun so far. I'm excited to see how long the awkwardness lasts, if they'll ever address the possibility of them being more than just friends or if it's even a question of getting out of that awkwardness by staying "besties." There are a lot of directions this could go in, but right now, I love where they're at and I love what this dream has done for the two. Also, Paula's story was probably the highlight of the episode. I could not stop laughing. She says things in such a genuine and straight-forward way even when what's coming out of her mouth is so ridiculous and I just love her so much.
This leads me to the Quote of the Episode: "He told me we were gonna move to Antarctica and conceive penguin fetuses."
Lastly, we had a nice moment between Mia and David. They're in such a great place right now. I loved the part where Mia said the thing about being on PCP and fighting off the American Military. It was a good build up to the "supervillain origin story" punchline that got me good. Again, as much as I praise you for being flawless at writing drama, you're so, so, so, so good with the comedy. It always feels natural and stems from a real place of character or conversation, and this was another perfect example of it.
Overall, another strong episode for the new season of Audition. It felt nice to have an episode that had so many shades of the very first season to not just remind us of where the show started, but to in turn see how far these characters have come since then by placing them in situations of seasons past. I'm looking forward to all the new characters coming into the fold. I'm especially looking forward to where this Paula/Michael storyline is heading. And I love the returned focus on Alex and Alisha and their friendship. I've missed them and the show so much. Well done!

The hardest part of this episode was definitely finding a way to introduce all of these new characters in a natural way that didn't feel overcrowded or forced, so I'm glad you've enjoyed all of their inclusions. We look at each one on them pretty in depth in 5.08 and we'll learn a lot about each of them, and some new relationships will be formed between themselves and with Alex and Alisha. HAHA! I loved writing the opening. I try and throw it humor whenever I can, so coming up with the idea for why Alex and Alisha needed to find a new acting class seemed like the perfect opportunity to throw in a rather wacky scene. Glad you enjoyed it! I think it's important to find a proper balance between the humor and the drama. I think Alisha's nerves and everything she's been feeling for a while was a nice way to create that divide of whether it falls into a funny or series realm. I mean, she's been through a lot mentally and I think stepping into a new atmosphere where she knows something is bound to go wrong is an extremely scary thing for her. And like I said above, I'm glad you found all of the new characters' introductions unique and easy to follow. It's funny, if you take out the awkward stutters and lingering glances then you'd have a pretty normal Michael and Paula scene. I really liked playing that idea. We're now seeing this relationship through Paula's eyes. We know how she feels, and for the past four sequences we've seen how Michael feels. It's a really creative experience for me. I'm having fun with the awkwardness, but I don't think it'll last too much longer. I don't want this storyline to be known for its awkward encounters. I want it to be known for its peeling back of Paula's mentality with how she views someone she's never really had an attraction to. Stay tuned! #JustPaulaThings More Mia/David to come in 504! Watch out for it Glad you enjoyed it! Hopefully the stride can maintain a momentum for the rest of the sequence! I know you're a huge fan of Alex and Alisha's relationship, so the next episode should really please you in that regard. Also got some Rose/Robbie thrown in there. Can't wait to hear your thoughts!

I totally forgot to leave a review for the season premiere but, you know me. But I just finised reading 5.02 and 5.03! So I'll just be doing bullet point reviews because that's an easy way for me to get my thoughts across without rambling like an idiot! So --
5.02: Acting 102 - I love how you're really focusing on Alex and Alisha this season. It kind of feels like you're going back to the roots of the show, which is them, even though you never really forgot them, but still. You're putting a huge focus on them getting to a new start and that's honestly great. - The acting class part was fun, very diverse if I might add. It's going to be interesting to see all of these different personalities play off each other in future episodes and see what they will do for Alex and Alisha's story. - Paula and Michael... YOU NEED TO STOP TEASING ME! Clearly Paula has feelings for Michael and they just need to get together. I appreciate you taking the slow route with that, as you're not just thrusting them together for the sake of having them together. But for real, as a fan of this show, I need them together. But as a fellow writer, I appreciate the slow burn. - David and Mia. Honestly, I was sorta against it at first, but this season sold me on it. I love them. And I hate you for making me love them. But I have this strange feeling that things are going so great for them now, that things are going to go bad soon. If David gets shot again I S2G! - Overall, very solid episode, I'm excited to see what's coming next.
5.03: Southern Comfort for the Hollywood Soul - First things first, love the title. - I love how Rose and Robbie have their own story right now. I'm excited to see if this band thing really plays off soon because it would be fun to see them have to build up from it just being the two of them. - The Money Issue for David is still in play, but it makes me wonder what he's gonna spend that money on. I also loved that "I'm adopted -- wait" line. Very funny. - Alisha and Kelsey reuniting seems to open up a few things, which it kind of did in this episode with Alisha coming out as Bi to Alex. I think it was time for her to come out to somebody but just her saying she felt like she's ruining everything and then comes out, was a bit weird to me. Unless this was something a long time coming and she just EXPLODED in feels, then it makes complete sense as to why she felt that way. - Again, another solid episode, can't wait for more episodes!

AUDITION Season 5 | "Southern Comfort for the Hollywood Soul"
"Southern Comfort for the Hollywood Soul" felt like a closer follow-up from the Season 5 premiere than the previous episode in it's return to the set-up of these major storylines for the show's core cast. While Rose and Robbie had a healthy debate about what comes next for their singing careers, Alisha is hit with a blast from the not-so-distant past that has her finally open up to her best friend, Alex, in a way that offers some much needed closure from the fourth season. And while David has had quite the vacation from all the drama since the season began, it seems like the issue of all this money he received from his incident is going to shape his direction for the season. Enough of the recap, let's crack on with the review!
Alisha's journey last season was a definite highlight that showed the character bounce back from a rather complicated situation and later delve into this exploration of her identity which resolved in this newfound understanding of her sexuality. A "cliffhanger" of sorts for the finale involved the coming together of Alex and Alisha - a real back to basics vibe - but they both had some things up in the air that I was really hoping to see addressed between those two because they are best friends and this episode really delivered on it. Alisha coming out as bisexual to Alex didn't just feel like a great moment I was waiting for but it felt earned. You went about this storyline in all the right ways and I appreciate letting Alisha figure herself out on her own with her own arc away from Alex last season because it not only did so much for Alisha's character going forward, but it made this moment even more rewarding because - as it says in the script - "[Alex's] seen a new page of his best friend's life being written in front of him." I just thought that was beautiful. I mean we knew Alex wouldn't be anything but the greatest in learning this about his best friend, but you still had a way of surprising us with it through Alex's perspective. I loved how he reassured Alisha that it changes nothing, that he'll always love her. I just felt like Alisha's progression in that scene of being rather closed off and unsure at the beginning to her opening up and navigating through that offered this sense of relief and was structured in a really clever way. You could feel how at ease Alisha became with Alex knowing that side of her now and I wonder if it plays a part in squashing some of her anxieties going forward.
Speaking of Alex, I'm glad you waited on him opening up about his insecurities right now. I think seeing Alisha go it alone last year was truly beneficial to her and while I'm not saying "yes, wash, rince and repeat that approach," I do believe that isolating Alex and how he's feeling will offer a similar satisfaction for when he does open up to Alisha. But I love how mirrored they are in this. I love how you have this moment that pushes them closer together only to remind us that there's still something being left unsaid in this situation. I think that adds drama. I think it heightens things. And I'm interested to see what similarities and differences there will between Alex and Alisha's arcs. And it also makes me wonder who Alex should open up to first. Would Rose understand if Alex tells Alisha something but doesn't want to necessarily tell her yet? Would Alisha be upset about sharing all of herself to Alex only for him to keep it from her? There's a lot of ways this can go and I'm really excited (and very nervous) about how it will go down.
Back onto Rose, I am loving her this season. I'm quite vocal (*chuckles*) about my love of pairing Rose and Robbie up for scenes, but it's not even about that. Without sounding corny or trying to make a pun, she just appears very confident this season and I think there's something to be said about how that is kind of the opposite of Alex this season. It'll be interesting to see if they can maintain this really strong and really healthy relationship with them in two very different places. But outside of her relationship, I'm excited about the band. I know we just met a whole string of new characters in the previous episode, but you're really good when it comes to characters. I'm all for introducing band members, hosting auditions, etc. Also, I f*cking adore David/Rose friendship. He styled her like Black Canary. Dude. They have such an awesome friendship. I love all these characters so much.
So that brings me to my Audition fave. What I love about this show is that it always commits to its characters and its stories in a way that I feel only the greatest shows do. The fact that we're still talking about the money, and it's still playing a part in David's story and that being shot isn't something that takes a quick recovery episode and then moves on... it's got me over here repeating the same praise I spew all the time, but I'm just so happy reading a show that explores every facet of something. David has had quite a relaxed opening to the season. The money coming back into play and potentially being the catalyst for his journey this season is exciting. I honestly have no idea what he's planning. Part of me thinks he might open his own comic book shop rather than take the job, but I don't know. It could be something completely different and new. But it's the only thing I can think of coming out of what we've had so far for him this season. Either way, I can't wait to see what he does.
Lastly, I wanted to talk about Kelsey. I was a little worried about bringing her back into the story because I think I grew to dislike her. And I really hope that doesn't feel like a negative point to make because disliking a character doesn't always reflect on the show. You have conflicts, and you have drama, and sometimes it positions you to go this way or go on that side and I certainly never saw me disliking her by season's end as a failure on your part. However, I actually liked how she served as a catalyst for Alisha to come out in this episode. I liked that you can have characters from earlier seasons just show up. It makes the world that has been created in Audition feel more realistic, and I'm very open to Kelsey coming back. Maybe things will be different with Alisha more accepting of herself and more aware of her identity now rather than being in that place of struggling to figure it all out.
Quote of the episode: "Alisha Farah Hall, you will never be a burden to me as long as we are on this floating green and blue planet."
Overall, three episodes in and still going strong. I love what this episode is setting up with DOUBLE R and the soon-to-be-band, as well as David and what he's going to do with the money. I love the closure the episode found in Alisha opening up to Alex and those two continuing to be the heart of the show. I'm excited to see how far Alex is going to let himself be washed out at sea on his own before he lets someone reel him in to shore. This is a very promising season.

I totally forgot to leave a review for the season premiere but, you know me. But I just finised reading 5.02 and 5.03! So I'll just be doing bullet point reviews because that's an easy way for me to get my thoughts across without rambling like an idiot! So -- Thanks for leaving your thoughts, Brian! I love hearing your feedback, and it's always greatly appreciated Last sequence was a huge one for Alisha, and this one will be a huge one for Alex, so I think diving back into the core relationship of the show was a really important factor for really driving that emotional aspect. The acting class resurfaces back in ep 5, and all of the actors will have a pretty large focus in ep 8. It's always fun bringing in new characters, and I think with Alex's dwindling confidence it was really important for him to be immersed in more acting related things. NEVER! Paula is very much in denial about these feelings, and she really needs to take the time to figure them all out. And you're right, it's gonna be a slow burn. I think this relationship was definitely the wild card for everyone, including me. I never expected to love writing them as much as I do, and I think their relationship is a testament to how far they've both come in their journeys. More of them in ep 4. Awesome! I try, I try Their story from last sequence was just so large that it needed to have a part 2 and bleed into this one. Really happy you're enjoying it. Ep 4! Alisha has been through a lot, and for almost 18 episodes she's been confused about her new sexuality, so I think her viewing all of the bad things around her as she's "ruining everything" really just shows how much of a toll all of this is taking on her. Seeing Kelsey triggered those feelings again, and so I thought it was fairly natural for her to feel that way. Thanks again, Brian!

I almost call this episode was a part 2 to the sequence 4 finale, mainly towards how it followed Alex and Alisha. But anyway, so happy to see some more thoughts from you, and glad to know this episode was another nice installment because this one in particular was a highlight of the entire series for me to write! I think this moment has really been building ever since Alisha discovered she was bisexual. It was such an awesome moment to write. I think mostly importantly, though, this was about Alisha and not Alex, so I'm glad you liked that time was taken for her to discover herself first before allowing him entrance into this new part of her life. I think that's really important. Also wanted to take this moment to highlight how amazing Alex can be for Alisha. Just all around stoked you enjoyed this scene as much as I enjoyed writing it Couldn't have that resolution this early, haha! Alex's journey this sequence will definitely parallel Alisha's from the last one, but he's going to go about it in a completely new way. We're going to see a lot of new sides for him, some good and some bad, but new nonetheless. Also, Alex's storyline is going to be a lot more external than Alisha's was. She hid what struggles she was going through, and she could properly be somewhat open about them with Kelsey. With Alex, his feelings are going to shine through a lot more, almost a balance between inside and out. Oh, and all of your questions will be answered, they just might take a while I think Rose has finally realized that she and Robbie have the skills to make this dream of theirs happen. I think Robbie has boosted her confidence in her abilities, and vice versa. Them trying to form a band is the next step in testing that confidence to see if they can succeed with one, or if they need to keep trying their chances as a trio (Flynn included). Rose and Alex will contrast each other quite a lot once the sequence gets rolling, and a stronger focus on them will follow. Also, ROSAVID. The resurfacing of the money is the catalyst, like you said, for David's journey this sequence. It's gonna open up a lot of things for him, and that's a nice focus in ep 4. Next episode we'll see David's new routine after taking the job at the comic shop, and we'll see him exposed to his people at comic con. So I hope you enjoy that! Kelsey showing back up needed to happen for Alisha's to finally open up to Alex, and there's still some uncharted territory between her and Alisha, so I really want, and need, to explore that dynamic again. Kelsey gets some much needed focus in ep 6, so hopefully after that episode you can grow out of that dislike, but if you don't then that's totally okay. You can't like everyone, nor should you haha. #Halleta [/div][/div]
Yay! So glad you're enjoying these episodes, and hopefully you continue to enjoy the rest. Next two episodes have a huge focus on David and then Rose/Robbie, so you're bound to love them! Thanks again for the review, Jack, always love them!

AUDITION Season 5 | "Comic Sans""Comic Sans" shifted its focus to David this week in a more comedy-driven outing than that of episodes past and worked to explore the changing nature of his dreams as he experiences a very sudden, but logical revelation in regards to his future. Elsewhere, Alisha was — for lack of a better analogy here — heading out of the darkness she'd been in for so long while Alex seems to be taking the opposite trajectory. An interesting contrast that makes me a little scared for my boy, Alex, but all the more excited to see where things are headed.
First up, I have to talk about David. I feel like it's been so long since he's been involved in acting that you're almost in the same spot as him when this episode rolls around. Him having this realisation that the world of comics is where he wants to be, and where his dreams lie... it made all the sense in the world and felt like a very natural development for him. I think so much has changed since he was shot and he's been on a journey that calls for this kind of reflection and second-take on his dreams and where he's headed. So I really appreciated that while this revelation was quite sudden and out of the blue for him, it was a very organic and logical revelation for the audience to see play out.
There was a moment in the episode between David and Mia where I did kind of start to feel a little strange about the relationship. I love them. They're adorable together. Don't get me wrong. But I think we need more of Mia and her identity outside of this relationship, or at least more of a balance. While it's totally cute to see Mia read up on all these comics, and immerse herself in this world, I wish there was something about Mia that could be shared with David and there can be this exchange rather than it being a little more one-sided. The line about David giving Mia "research" just had me look at them in a different perspective in this particular scene. However, Mia having that moment at the end of the scene really saved it for me, and I guess I would like to see more of her identity outside of David and his interests (even though I understand their roles on the show are a little different — David, being a series regular, and Mia, being a reoccurring character).
Towards the end of the episode, David and Mia run into Freya (from Screenwriters Paradise) at Comic Con. I was a little mixed about this moment because while I thought the set-up and the chemistry and the character stepping into the world of Audition all felt very natural, having her play such an integral role at episode's end in a scene that lasted about six to seven pages felt a little rushed and/or forced. I think it would have been much more satisfying to see Mia, who has been reading these comics, express her feelings about the Wonder Woman analogy that helps trigger this realisation in David rather than this sudden introduction of two characters. I understand certain things are heightened in TV, but it stripped away from reality a little and made things slightly awkward. So, overall I was a little mixed about it. I kind of would have loved it if instead of having Freya for this one moment, you had her for a small arc where her contribution to David's arc would feel more earned.
Despite those really minor things, I loved this episode for David. It was really great to see this "day in the life of" direction for him. It's always a pleasure to see his parents, and see his home environment. I truly feel like comic books have saved him twice now. I loved seeing him in that shop, seeing him with Mia, seeing how happy he is now after everything he's been through on the show. Comic Con felt like a reward that he'd earned after all of it and so I'm glad that you took time out of the season to really put him front and centre and give us an episode like this.
As for the other characters, I think my favourite scene had to be between Alisha and Rose. I think you could have taken a very boring approach to Alisha "coming out" to all the characters in the show that she feels comfortable telling, but you didn't at all. Last week's episode where Alisha told Alex was driven by emotion and driven by a lot of different things than the scene in this week's episode with Alisha and Rose which I felt came from a more comedic place whilst maintaining those elements that remind you that this is important, and that this means a lot to Alisha. Blurting it out in the middle of a conversation was priceless to me. And it was so unintentional on Alisha's part. That was such a good moment. It was funny, it had a lot of heart, and it gave us another glimpse at a really awesome female friendship so I loved it. It also provided me with my favourite quote of the episode...
Quote of the Episode: "Ice creams melt. Friendships don't." - Rose.
Lastly, Alex is making ALL THE WRONG CHOICES (*stern father voice*). There is always this unpredictable nature about Audition that I truly enjoy and man has it hit me like a brick in this week's episode. I love the fact that Wyatt is still around and I love — from a story perspective — how he's pulling Alex into this new territory. As I said to you, I feel like I had a That's So Raven moment and flash forwarded to all the crap that Alex is going to go through now but I'm just as excited as I am worried for the guy. This is new. I think seeing where this dynamic between he and Wyatt goes will be exciting. I think Alex giving into certain temptations, whether it be getting smashed or taking drugs or what have you... it opens up new doors and I think exploring these isolated feelings and this extremely internalised sadness that he's going through with this kind of an outlet... it'll provide a lot of great character moments and story and I'm just excited. I love Alex so much. I'm excited. I'm scared. I'm nervous. I can't wait.
Overall, another strong episode for the season. It was a very rewarding episode as a David fan. While I had very, very, very minor issues to raise, I feel like this was a standout episode for me. I really enjoyed the humour in this one, and the lighter tone as well as the certain developments that took place (namely, the Alex/Wyatt scene). I just feel like this entire season is going to be incredible. Four episodes in and it's been phenomenal, and all the arcs that have been set up so far look very promising. Well done, man. I can't wait to see where the season goes from here...

Audition 5.04: Comic Sans
Another Audition episode? Must be Thursday (okay, that was stupid). But anyway, here is my bullet point review of “Comic Sans” - First off, this is a David episode. And I’m happy about that. David is a great character, he’s fun, bubbly and has that awesomeness that a golden retriever has. (Weird…I’m going to keep going). But I loved everything about his story this episode. Him and Mia have come a long way. I admit I wasn’t really for them at the start, but I really enjoy their story and it’s very well thought out and very cool. Mia is really trying to enter into his world, but what about him entering her world? I mean, we did see it a bit last season but it would also fun to see it a bit more. - Alisha coming out to Rose was nice. But it kinda feels like she’s just yelling it and stuff. I would have preferred it to be a bit more warranted. But it did lead to a nice moment between them. Paula and Michael need to get together, now. (I’ll put this in every review until it happens) - I had forgotten about Wyatt, but it’s nice to see old characters come back. But Alex getting fake ids. I’m interested to see where this story will take us. - Freya was nice to see. I know she’s from “Screenwriter’s Paradise” and it was cool to see her come into the frey-a (I’m sorry). Her and David geeking out with each other was a pretty awesome thing. It was nice fun scene. - Overall, really enjoyable episode. I can’t wait to see what else we’re getting this season because you’re now setting up a lot. I can’t wait to see where David goes next now that he no longer wants to be an actor. I do hope Alisha does stop blurting out that she’s Bi, but I feel so conflicted about it because it leads to nice moments after. I don’t know, I’m 50/50 about it. I see it as funny because, yeah coming out sucks. And being bi, it does feel like you have to do it all the damn time. But I’m just worried it’ll become a running gag. I have faith in you though and I know you, so I don’t see it happening. I can’t wait for the next episode

5.01: "23 Days"
Its BACK! I'm so happy to finally have Audition back in my life.
What a great way to start of the sequence. It was all pretty upbeat and fun - until the end but we'll get on to that in soon. One thing I loved about the sequence four finale was the focus back on Alex and Alisha's friendship. Like I mentioned before, when we have these moments it really does take us back to where it all started and all these feelings come flooding back to when I started reading Audition- 4 YEARS AGO!! This episode seemed to focus on Alex more than drunken Alisha. The way this episode ended makes me really concerned for Alex but excited because I feel like this is leading into a huge story arc for him throughout this sequence. Alex has always takes everything harder and personally, he's been like that from the beginning so hopefully that does lead to his demise in Hollywood.
Rose and Robbie's journey is something that I've been excited for for some time now and now your finally diving into it. I love that your now starting to focus on the musical side of Hollywood and it should be interesting with them seeking out more members for their band. But I feel like this may cause some separation between Rose and Alex, which I really do not want to happen. Especially because like I touched on above, Alex would take that pretty hard and he is totally head of heels for this girl.
The cuteness that is Mia and David is back and cuter than ever. You can already see how close they have become between the time of the sequence 4 finale to now. I love the way Mia changes when she is with David, but I hope she doesn't completely change her stand offish, brutally harsh self is something that makes her stand out from the rest of the characters. I feel like David is part of her redemption story but I feel like it could take a lot longer than they all think for her to complete leave her past self behind.
Last but not least- that scene between Paula and Michael. So it looks like that daydream Paula had has been playing in her mind a lot since we last saw her. C'mon, Paula just tell Michael how you feel! You know you want it, you know we all want it. I just have my fingers crossed that this is finally the sequence its gonna happen. Haha.
Overall I'm excited to see what you have in store for these characters this sequence, Brady. I can't wait to check out the rest.

I really wanted to establish early on all of these different interweaving threads that we'll be exploring throughout the sequence, specifically David for this episode. I also think the first half of Audition sequences are always much more calm and tame compared to the second half, so that's why I like to plan little seeds like Alex slowly moving into a much more darker place while Alisha is beginning to embrace herself. I think everyone (including myself) started to slowly forget that David wanted to be an actor, so I really wanted to explore that. Ever since he recovered from the shooting, David has really been making these decisions that affect his life the way he wants it to be affected. I really wanted him immersed in the world of something he loves, because we've only ever seen him talk about comics with people who don't share that same love. I thought this was really important for him. I think last sequence we saw David being immersed in Mia's world when they smoked together and when they went to the party together, but I do understand where you're coming from and that's a really fair point. It is about balance, but I do think right now, being only 4 episodes in of them officially being together and settled, that it's important for Mia to find a connect with David and be supportive of him 100%. Moving forward though, especially the next episode where they have a major focus, there will be a shift of David and Mia doing things the latter would prefer to do. Also, definitely not set in stone, but a flashback Mia episode is in the works for the back half of the sequence Another fair point. I'm always worried about things feeling forced and rushed in such a small amount of episodes. One of the main reasons episodes from now on run 15+ pages haha. But I think Freya, who very much resembles a lot of characteristics with David, was the right fit to have him see that his dreams can change. Mia hasn't been through that like Freya has, so I don't know if it would have worked as well for it to have been Mia, in my opinion. I just don't see if she could have made the connection unlike Freya could have, if that makes sense. Writing all three of them together was a highlight for the sequence so far, though! I loved writing the opening, it was so much fun. I just really love writing David by himself, so maybe you'll get to see more of that. I really wanted to contrast how Alisha came out to Alex with how she came out to Rose. I think the first time coming out is truly one of if not the hardest coming out experience. I'm really hoping to find very unique and different approaches to Alisha coming out to the rest of the people she's closest to. Anyway, this scene was just such a joy to write. I really wanted to focus in on the relationship between these two ladies because I think it's really important that Alisha and Rose have this type of friendship. I'm all for the ladies. #Rosisha I don't want to say a whole lot about Alex's story anymore. Just expect some things to not go where you think they're gonna go, and get ready to cry
Thanks again for reading and reviewing, Jack! Always love to see your thoughts. Some more humor in the next one with a strong focus on your favorite singing duo Rose and Robbie! Can't wait for you to read!

Audition 5.04: Comic Sans
Another Audition episode? Must be Thursday (okay, that was stupid). But anyway, here is my bullet point review of “Comic Sans” Thanks for reading and reviewing, Brian! I really wanted to take an entire episode to focus on David and his dream, since it was vaguely hinted at in the sequence premiere. And like I told Jack, I don't see it as the right time for David to be entering Mia's world again at this moment, since we saw him beginning to do so when they were smoking and at the party. I don't see it as her yelling it. She's not doing it for attention, she feels a trust with Rose so she is able to share this precious information with her. I think it was warranted. N e v e r Wyatt was always intended to stick around, and now everyone knows why! I loved writing Freya and her interactions with David and Mia. It was so much fun. I would love to bring her back for a follow up. She and David literally have so much chemistry. Thanks again for reading, Brian! Can't wait to see what you think of the rest of the sequence!

5.01: "23 Days"Its BACK! I'm so happy to finally have Audition back in my life. Thanks for reading and reviewing, Jay! Always great to see your thoughts I really thought it was appropriate to hype the mood back up in Hollywood. I think this show works the most, and I have the most fun writing it, when I manage to balance the drama and the humor, so I wanted to start off with some laughs. I love the relationship between Alex and Alisha, and it's going to play a huge part in this sequence. Rose and Robbie probably have the second biggest story this sequence, right behind Alex and Alisha. They've really become set on making their dream a reality, so they're going to stop on nothing to achieve that. Rose and Robbie have a major focus in 505! And Rose and Alex won't start drifting apart. I mean, they have two completely different stories so there isn't always time for them to share scenes, but that doesn't mean their relationship is dwindling or weakening. Mia definitely hasn't lost her spunk. Expect that side of her to still be around when she's not just with David. Well, it won't be as prominent as it was in s3. I think David has really helped her mature, but there will be an episode in the back half that focuses on how far she's come. If only it were that simple! You'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out Thanks so much, Jay!

5.02: "Acting 102"I'm still laughing and I can't stop! This episode had so many LOL moments which made this such an entertaining read. Thanks, Brady! Awesome to hear! Like I said it my last review, I wanted to keep up the humor early on The beginning of this episode was definitely one of the most creative I've done on the show so far, and it was a ton of fun. I'll definitely take the opportunity to do more like it in the future since it's had such a positive reception. I really wanted the new acting class to show the new change in Alex and Alisha's life, one of which is leading down a darker path while the other is stepping in towards the lighter side. That's so great to hear! Coming up with Paula's story was very.... interesting for me, to say the least. And writing all of the characters and their introductions, including Alisha's, was super fun as well! You'll catch back up with the class in 505 It definitely will. Already have some episodes plan that will hopefully be some of the most unique to date for the show. Can't wait to see what you think
