Just In: DC Comics' Bane Coming to 'Watchtower!' VSGuide has learned that the search for the perfect Bane has begun, as the DC Comics baddie is due to appear in the highly anticipated eighteenth episode of the season, titled "Salvation." While the general premise for the episode surrounds a "twelve men enter, one man leaves" situation for Helena, and a string of criminals, producers told VSGuide that Bane isn't one of them.
In DC Comics lore, Burt Weston aka Film Freak met his demise at the hands of Bane in the popular Batman storyline, "Knightfall," and we can't help but speculate that Bane being introduced into the expanding universe of Watchtower at the same time as Film Freak isn't a coincidence. While producers are yet to cast the venom-infused Batman baddie, one thing is definitely certain: "Bane will play a rather cataclysmic role in our fourth season, and we found the perfect opportunity to introduce him into our world a little earlier to connect this season with the next."
Series creator Jack Malone continued by confirming a different approach to their finale than that of the previous seasons, and how it called for certain decisions in the final eight episodes of Season Three. "In [season one] we had Project Respawn, and in [season two] we had Selina kidnapped by Hush," Malone stated, "This season we wanted to introduce certain elements of our fourth season in a more organic way, introducing Wonder Woman in [episode sixteen], the next big bad in [episode seventeen], and now a character who will play a larger role later on, which is Bane in [episode eighteen]." While the Batman villain won't serve as the next Joker, or the next Hush, he will be an arc-long threat for Team Watchtower to face, and a threat they will be familiar with in the future because of his role in episode eighteen. "It's nice now to be reaching past the half-way point of our series and have certain piece of our puzzle falling into place. The end of this season, and what we've got planned for next, really feels like we're starting to wrap the show up and so we hope the fans follow us into the next and final fifty episodes of our show as they have the first."
An official casting announcement for Bane will be revealed later as the search continues to find the perfect actor to take on such a notorious role from the Batman mythology, but VSGuide will update you whenever there is news. Stay tuned!

Major Casting News: Meet The Cast Of "The Salvation Games" Comic book fans are in for a treat when the eighteenth episode of Watchtower's third season comes around. In the episode, villain-of-the-week, Burt Weston / Film Freak (guest star Dylan O'Brien) will construct a twisted game pinning criminals against criminals in the fight for their own salvation, and VSGuide has the scoop on who you can expect to be in the ring with our very own Helena Bertinelli (Kayla Ewell), among any other surprises. So sit back, and prepare for the biggest casting scoop of the season:
Despite surfacing from the comics, series creator Jack Malone told VSGuide that his goal was not to name-drop, or to have these comic book counterparts and their history serve as the only purpose for bringing them on board, claiming: "If you catch the easter-eggs, then that's awesome, but if you have no idea who these characters are then you're not missing out on anything." Instead, Malone is interested in filling in the gaps of the missing year between seasons two and three where Helena (Kayla Ewell) was the only hero fighting corruption in Gotham City. "I think people forget that Gordon was gone for twelve months, and so was Chloe, and so was Bruce," Malone reminded, "That left Gotham with Helena and her crusade. All these characters, and all these criminals are all the people who she would have gone up against before we reunited with Helena in the premiere, and so we're not only building this universe in a way that reshapes the Batman mythos, but we're also expanding our show and our show's history."
Every guest star announced will be appearing in at least one scene throughout the episode, some playing more of a role than others. "The games are broadcast throughout the entire city, so you may see one character fighting for their lives on this island, or you'll catch them in the background on a television screen while two characters are having a conversation about trying to stop Burt Weston. Either way, it allows us to bring a new depth to the storyline and heighten everything in a way we couldn't if we didn't have a cast within our cast for the show within our show." Try saying that five times fast!
Also expected to play a role in the episode is DC Comics' Bane. Earlier in the week, it was revealed the Batman baddie would be making his debut appearance in the eighteenth episode of the season, but will not be involved in the games themselves. Now, VSGuide has the scoop on who will be bringing this character to life: Dave Bautista ('Guardians of the Galaxy'). Bane is said to share at least one scene alongside Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne/Batman) and will be an essential aspect of the episode. Bautista revealed that he's in deep conversation with producers to see Bane come back in a much larger role for the fourth season.
Thoughts on the major casting news? Who are you most looking forward to seeing? Sound off below!

Happy Salvation Games and may the odds be ever in your favor But all in all, I can't wait to see how this episode plays out. I am super excited to see the villians Helena was going to go after. I'm also assuming this is the episode Chloe finds out about the list and discovers that Helena was basically the only one protecting Gotham. Also Bane, dear god. Im terrified that you might have him break Bruce's spine. And I know this is totally random but, will Dick and Bruce have any one on one time fighting crime together?

Im terrified that you might have him break Bruce's spine. And I know this is totally random but, will Dick and Bruce have any one on one time fighting crime together? This episode kind of deals with everything Helena. When I decided Guido was going to die, I had this trajectory for Helena in mind and the conflict between her and Harley Quinn was kind of the birth of it all -- she took a life, and suddenly carrying out this crusade where she would go on to unapologetically take the lives of other criminals didn't seem so far-fetched because she had already experienced that "first kill." While carving a smile onto her own face might have seemed - at the time - just another thing for the character to endure, it was paving the way towards a greater purpose and that will become actualised in this particular episode. There's also a lot of pay off towards everything else we've seen surround the character this season, and there's almost a finality to the character's story that's exciting and fulfilling to write, and Helena has definitely earned it. So this episode will deal with her trajectory, her relationship with Lisa, her friendship with Chloe, and set us up for an interesting final four episodes of the season The list is a huge part of this episode, not just because its what's gathered all these villains for the episode, but also because it represents Helena's trajectory. She wanted to kill herself. She started the season with a crusade to kill all these criminals with the last "criminal" to cross of the list being herself. So this episode tackles it head on. The list is almost predetermined to be fulfilled in this episode, and so if Helena doesn't die in the games, she's left with the question she struggled with at the beginning of the season: must she share the same fate as those she killed, or can she be redeemed? Bane is a lot of fun in this episode. This episode kind of explores his origins in a way that isn't entirely focused on him. It's hard to explain without giving a lot away, but there is a connection, similar to the comics, between Burt Weston and Bane, and this episode will set up a conflict between Bane and Batman that Bruce will probably grow to regret in the future. The situation with Dick is a little difficult. As a fan of Nightwing, I thought he was perfect for Helena's storyline, so I withdrew all the history between Dick Grayson and Batman, and made him stand on his own as a hero rather than be a sidekick to anyone first as I do have plans in the future for a Robin to come into the fold. However, he was very much a supportive character to Helena, and while I'm certain he'll surface a few more times before the season is over, I'm almost positive it'll be connected more to Helena than Bruce. He's been a huge part of this season, and I definitely can picture him being back for the finale, but I think a Dick/Bruce team up is something that you won't see until one of the final two seasons comes around. Initially, I wasn't interested in creating the "bat family" from the comics, and I believe the new Ben Affleck films will be heavily centred on the bat-family (according to rumours) but as I said, there will eventually be a "Robin" on the show -- as for which version, I won't say -- just like there'll eventually be other aspects from the Batman comics, such as a batmobile, an "Oracle," a more detective-based Batman, all of which could build towards this idea of Batman working alongside Nightwing, with a Robin sidekick, and Oracle guiding him in the fight against crime. It's just a process that I have to tackle organically, and Season Four will definitely see Bruce, and by extension his persona as Batman, closer to the comics than it has been in the first three seasons.

I personally cannot wait to see the detective-angle of Bruce's journey into becoming Batman, and wonder how you will tackle it, and who will train him! It's going to be a lot of fun. This season, Bruce sort of had to step up as the lead male character, and so there wasn't a whole lot of room in this new role to explore many aspects of his origin story. Once we found that iconic name for his persona, I wanted to focus on other things for the character such as his relationship with Selina during mid-season, his developing dynamic with Talia, and as things develop towards the finale, we'll see more of him and Gordon, and more of his determination to stop Hush. There's an interesting connection between Bruce and the identity of Hush that we'll discover in 315, and it'll kind of serve as the driving force to pit Batman against Hush in the finale. As for the fourth season, the goal is to have him be as close to the iconic Batman from the comics as we've ever seen him, and completing the origin story for the character that began in the pilot

Yeah, I don't like just duplicating the comics so having this extensive "bat-family" was something I never really wanted to tackle. There is a particular Robin from the comics that would be perfect for the show, and so -- as I've always said -- if the story calls for it, it'll happen and the story is calling for that aspect to happen eventually. Season Four will have a few new heroes that I can't talk about yet who I'm really excited to introduce, but a huge part of the season will showcase Bruce developing into the Batman we know from the comics, all being done within the first seven to nine episodes of the season I'm excited for episode twenty, too. I know the team aspect of the episode is exciting to you, but the thing I'm most excited about writing is having our main protagonist and our main antagonist locked in the same room together for the majority of the episode. It's going to be really tense and a lot of fun to write

All this talk of the 'Bat-family', it reminds me of that scene in the trailer of Helena looking at the Batsuit in awe, and that makes me think about what Jack said about her trying to find redemption - could Huntress possibly be put to rest, for a while anyway, as Helena adopts the 'Batgirl' or 'Batwoman' identity, a la the "No Man's Land" storyline?

Speculation is seriously one of my favourite things in the world when it comes to spoilers/television, so seeing it for Watchtower makes me so happy right now. Writing the scene between Helena and Bruce (that you've seen in the trailer) was a lot of fun. This season started with Gotham essentially being Helena's city. She was fighting for it, and she was actively going out there and making the hard decisions to save it, and so there was this conflict between Helena and Bruce that was really fun to write. It's reached a point now where that conflict has fizzled out because Helena doesn't know about Bruce being Batman, meanwhile he's had to remain very straight-faced about the situation, knowing full well who is under the Huntress mask. So that scene is going to open up some old wounds, and take their dynamic a little further, and offer some resolution as well which is nice. Unfortunately, Helena won't be joining the Bat-family, and I think you'll know why that's not a possibility when you read the finale As for 'Batwoman' and 'Batgirl,' all in good time

I don't care how you do it, or when it happens, but I seriously look forward to you introducing characters like Kate Kane, Cassandra Cain, or Stephanie Brown - the idea that somewhere down the line, Bruce becomes enough of an inspiration as 'Batman' that one or two of these women will take up the mantle of 'Batwoman' or 'Batgirl'. We know Babs wont be going down that road, so I'm curious who and how the character of 'Batgirl' could eventually materialise in "WTR". A character like Cassandra, who when first introduced, is a mute, would be a great chance for writing, since all her emotions and interactions would be dialogue-free, if you keep her basics when introducing her. As for Kate, given her romantic inclinations, and society background, I'd love to see her interactions with Bruce as he adopts his 'playboy billionnaire' routine This may all be wishful thinking on my part, but we shall see...

And Countdown is the one episode I've been waiting for since you started this season!!!

As for Kate, given her romantic inclinations, and society background, I'd love to see her interactions with Bruce as he adopts his 'playboy billionnaire' routine This may all be wishful thinking on my part, but we shall see... There are a lot of different routes to go in and a lot of different characters, traits, and versions of these characters to examine and research and build upon when it comes to introducing these heroes from the comics, so I can't really address any of it right now. As for Bruce, I'm really excited at the possibilities season four brings him. As I've already said before, it's definitely the year that takes everything he's learned so far in the past three seasons, and launches him in the trajectory of The Batman for Season Four. Most of his "essential" developments in terms of stepping into that persona will happen during the first seven to nine episodes of the season I do have to agree with you that Hush and Chloe trapped in the clocktower will be interesting. My real question is how did they not realize Hush was in there as well.hahaha But I am excited that this season is almost over. And Countdown is the one episode I've been waiting for since you started this season!!! Hush won't be just "chilling" inside the Clocktower without being seen. It's not a convenient "oops, didn't see you there" moment, it's calculated. You'll know what I mean when you read the episode "Countdown" was a lot of fun to write. As much as this show can get caught up on all things Batman, or Huntress, or what have you, this is a show rooted in the character of Chloe Sullivan. Without her, there wouldn't be a show. So reaching a milestone where I can reflect back on how far she's come, and look towards the future of what is yet to come, was extremely rewarding. It's also nice now that I have an idea of what will happen in the last fifty episodes of the series, and working towards that from 317 onwards is exciting. I mean, the last two seasons of the show are probably going to be the most fun. There's a lot of growth, and a lot of changes happening, and the stakes will be even higher as we get closer to the finish line, and I so as excited as I am for you to see the fiftieth, I'm more excited about reaching the hundredth and seeing where all these characters and stories end up
