CASTING NEWS: A Demon Comes To Metropolis... "Lucifer" star Lesley-Ann Brandt has booked a guest role in an upcoming episode.
The actress, who plays the deliciously demonic Mazikeen, sworn protector of the Crown Prince of Hell himself, has signed on to play a character from the Wonder Woman mythos, 'Etta Candy'. The character of Candy, who originated back in the Golden Age of comics, has long been a supporting character of Wonder Woman, and has been reinvented several times over the intervening decades. Originally depicted as a plumb Caucasian woman with a love of sweets, she has been seen in various media, such as the 1970s "Wonder Woman" tv series, the failed TV pilot of 2011, and the upcoming DCEU film.
"The Etta Candy we will see in "Tattoo" is very much a mix of several of the later versions," explains Matthews, when asked about what inspired the casting and characterisation. "She's an agent of A.R.G.U.S. sent to liaise with the S.C.U. and the D.E.O. because of the nature of what happens in the episode. Being a government agent, she'll know how to handle herself in a fight, and she also comes from a military background."
When asked about the casting, Matthews told us, "Lesley actually tested out for us for another character, for a later episode, and although she was unsuccessful in that role, when we were tossing names around the room for who might fit the bill for Etta, she was a name we quickly all agreed on. Her work on "Lucifer" showed us that she's more then capable of hold both the attention of the viewer, and any fight she finds herself in."

VSGUIDE EXCLUSIVE:
Sci-Fi Legend Bruce Boxleitner Books Guest Role!
That's right, folks! The star of sci-fi epics "Babylon 5" and the "Tron" franchise will be making the first of what is hoped to be many visit to the 'Big Apricot'!
"We're absolutely thrilled Bruce has joined our growing family," admits self-professed "Babylon 5" fan Alex Matthews, the creator of "M:SCU", "he's not only a complete professional, but he brings such pathos and commitment to every scene, even the small one that signifies his debut."
When VSGuide asked about his actual role, Matthews played coy, "We don't want to give out his name because it's all part of a big surprise, but he's very important to one of our main characters, and the journey they take this year. I can reveal that he works in the government, and that he's got a lot of sway there. But his primary concern is to keep certain people safe from dangers they don't realize are around them."
In keeping with the secretive nature of the character, VSGuide was not allowed on set during the filming of his debut scene, and Boxleitner himself declined to comment beyond saying, "I'm very happy to be involved with this great show and the universe it operates in. There is a lot of hidden depth and backstory I look forward to exploring in more detail when and if I come back again."
Boxleitner will make his inaugral appearance in Episode 2x05: "Inject".

VSGUIDE EXCLUSIVE:
"Castle" Alum Molly Quinn Books Guest Role!
VSGuide has the exclusive reveal that Molly Quinn, formerly Alexis Castle of the ABC's hit detective series "Castle" will be appearing in the 7th episode of the season.
"There's a character we've always wanted to introduce into the VPNDCU from the very beginning of planning out the "M:SCU" story," revealed series creator Alex Matthews, "and Molly was always the top choice for that role. We're really excited she agreed to be a part of the family."
Regarding the character, Matthews explains that "she's a very naive and confused young woman, grieving the loss of several loved ones, completely out of her element in the big city of Metropolis that comes acropper of one of the gangs that roam the streets of Suicide Slums," but Matthews was also quick to add that "she's no damsel-in-distress, either."

Lance Reddick Confirms Return as DC Comics Black Manta!
VSGuide has been informed that Lance Reddick, the former "Fringe" and "The Wire" star, has once again donned the unmistakable deep-sea diving armor of the classic DC Comics supervillain, 'Black Manta'.
Reddick first appeared in the role in the Season 2 'minisode' "Crown", which primarily focused on the relationship between Alan Ritchson's 'Arthur Curry' and his on-screen wife 'Mera', played by Elena Satine. The 'minisode' established that Manta has already begun his vendetta against the King of the Seven Seas, although the reason behind it was vague. Episode 2x07, entitled "Tattoo" will remedy that, we're told.
"In our universe, we already know that Black Manta is around, thanks to Toyman's Marionette Ventures," explains series creator Alex Matthews, referring to the Season 10 "Smallville" episode "Prophecy". "But aside from a glimpse of his iconic helmet, we didn't really see much, and I always knew it was something I wanted to explore."
Reddick, on the S.T.A.R. Labs set, told us that he is looking forward to fans seeing his interpretation of this character, "Manta's history and motivations really set the tone for who he is now, as opposed to who he used to be. He's a father who has been denied, he's nursing a lot of pain, and I hope people will understand what pushes him in his path towards vengeance, and that he's not just a stock character."
VSGuide has already revealed that Shamiek Moore has been cast as 'Jackson Hyde', who in the comics is Manta's estranged son, who fights alongside Manta's hated enemy. The character was first introduced in the animated "Young Justice" series, then adapted into the comic book lore. "We've taken elements from both versions for our character, and his back story ties closely in with Manta - he's the reason Manta comes to Metropolis. We wanted to show that Manta is more then just the 'bad guy', and has a tragic past of his own," Matthews told us.
Reddick's 'Manta' will interact with many of the main and recurring cast, including Felicia Day's 'Kitty Faulkner', and Alex Carter's 'King Faraday', as well as guest star Lesley-Anne Brandt's 'Etta Candy' and previously confirmed special guest star Alan Ritchson.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: PHIL MORRIS
VSGuide had the opportunity to sit down with , the actor behind ‘ John Jones/Martian Manhunter’, and talk about his return to his “Smallville” role. VSGuide| It’s fair to say it’s been a while, Phil, since you played the role last. How does it feel to be back?Phil Morris| It feels really good, actually. John is such an interesting character, and we worked hard back on “Smallville ” to put our own stamp on the character and how to fit him into the show. What is fun about coming back is how the writers of “M:SCU ” have honoured that while also worked in some lore that deals with his comic book origins. VSG| Can you tell us much about how and why John is back?PM| John has history with the city of Metropolis; he lived there for years, working as a cop while he was powerless, but he stayed there when he got his powers back because he made a promise to Jor-El to look after Clark. He watched this team of heroes come together, and was part of that, he helped keep their secrets. But then Clark became Superman, he embraced his destiny, so John realized he wasn’t needed any more. VSG| How does this tie in with your guest appearances in “Watchtower”?PM| John’s involvement in those stories was very self-contained, he had a role to play as part of the ensemble, as the Martian Manhunter. Here, we focus very much on what John’s been doing since then, away from the superhero life. He’s left the Metropolis Police Department behind and found a calling doing something else. VSG| You worked alongside David Patkaeu in the “Smallville” episode “Bulletproof”. How was it reuniting with him?PM| It was a lot of fun. We sadly didn’t share any scenes together during that episode, but we got to know each other. I love the fact that the events of that episode are such a core part of who the character of Danny Turpin has become in this series, and that in the small scene we do share, it’s not simply brushed under the carpet.VSG| So there’s no big Danny/John moment in your episode?PM| I wouldn’t say that. There is definitely a ‘moment’, yeah, but it’s not the main focus of the episode. VSG| So who do you share scenes with, or is that too much of a loaded question?PM| [laughs] Actually, the majority of my time was with Jill [ Teed, series lead] , but I also share scenes with Fran [ Kranz], Alex [ Carter] and several of the episode’s guest cast. It was a lot of fun for me and Jill to play off each other, establishing the kind of relationship that our characters have, both in the here and now, and during John’s time in the department. VSG| You appeared as Martian Manhunter in the ‘minisode’ “Crown” and the earlier episode “Substitute”. You mentioned earlier that this episode focuses more on the civilian life of your character - does that mean you wont be suiting up?PM| Well, that would be telling, wouldn’t it. But if fans want more Martian Manhunter, I say to them that they won’t be disappointed. What really pulled me back was that the episode’s story is focused on the idea of John needing something beyond that life. Viewers who want that kind of story wont be disappointed. Phil Morris will return as ‘ John Jones/Martian Manhunter’ in the upcoming episode “ Monster”.

CASTING NEWS: "TEEN WOLF" AND "DOLLHOUSE" ALUMNI BOOK GUEST ROLES!
That's right, people! Not one, but TWO NEW GUEST ANNOUNCEMENTS!! It has been revealed to VSGuide that Haley Webb, formerly of "Teen Wolf" fame, has been booked for a one-episode guest appearance as the DC Comics character of 'Rita Farr', more commonly known as 'Elasti-Girl' of the superhero misfit team, the 'Doom Patrol'. In the lore of DC Comics, Rita is a Hollywood actress who, after exposure to unusual volcanic gases while shooting a film in Africa, discovers that she can expand or shrink her body at will, from hundreds of feet tall to mere inches in height. Due to an initial lack of control though, she is considered something of a freak, ending her career, before being recruited into the Doom Patrol, to use her abilities for good.
"This iteration of Rita is very much in her pre-superhero career, as a jobbing actress who's just landed the role of a lifetime, and is appearing at the Metro Wonder-Con as part of a publicity drive," Alex Matthews, series creator, tells us. "But this is Metropolis, so not everything is going to be smooth sailing."
Joining her is former "Dollhouse" and "X-Men: The Last Stand" star Olivia Williams. Williams has been cast as 'Marie Logan', a minor DC character whose major contribution is being the birth mother of 'Garfield Logan', a.k.a the Teen Titan known as 'Beast Boy'. She was previously adapted in the "Young Justice" animated series, and Matthews admits being heavily inspired by that version, voiced by Danica McKeller, who also voiced 'Miss Martian'. "Just like the YJ interpretation, Marie is also an actress, but compared to Rita, she's reaching the twilight of her career, and is trying to make ends meet. We'll also get to see her relationship with Garfield [played by guest star Connor Paolo], as both of them get involved in the incident that draws in the S.C.U. to Metro Wonder-Con."
Webb and Williams will appear in Episode 2x08: " Fixate".

CASTING EXCLUSIVE:
"KILLJOYS" STAR LUKE MACFARLANE
LANDS RECURRING GUEST ROLE!
VSGuide has been told that Luke Macfarlane, the former " Brothers and Sisters" star, currently staring in the hit SyFy series " Killjoys" with former " Smallville" star and " Watchtower" guest star Aaron Ashmore, will be appearing in an as-yet-unknown number of episodes througout the back half of the second season of " Metropolis: Special Crimes Unit". Macfarlane has landed the role of Thomas 'Tommy' Jagger, a DC Comics character long associated with both the Suicide Squad and Checkmate, as well as the Batman. However, series creator Alex Matthews explains that while certain aspects of his comic history have remained the same, others have been altered to better fit the current narrative. " Like the DC version, our Tommy Jagger is an openly gay man and the son of a golden-age superhero, the Judomaster. But in our version, his ties to Checkmate and Batman are non-existant." Matthews explained why certain aspects were changed, and it involes the main cast member he'll be interacting with the most over his time on the show, " In our universe, Tommy is the ex-boyfriend to Todd Rice. They knew each other back in the early days, when Todd was just beginning his search into who his biological parents were, and why they gave him up. Tommy was his rock, but eventually they drifted apart." Fans of the Todd/Damon dynamic, take heed! In an on-set brief interview, Macfarlane admitted that there is some coming tension in that relationship, and Tommy's arrival gives Todd a familiar face to turn to as he deals with several massive changes in his life. " Tommy's not here to cause trouble, but he's also in the right place at the right time when Todd needs someone to talk to and who knows his background. He knows exactly what Todd has gone through when wrestling with the idea of having a superhero for a parent. It pushed them apart, as they made the decision to make a better life for themselves then what they were doing when they first met." Macfarlane will debut in the eighth episode of the season, " Fixate".

Sad that the checkmate angle isnt kept, but i cant wait to see him show up and interact with Todd I've outline their first few scenes together, and it's a lot of fun having someone else for Todd to bounce off from - I hope these interactions show us a different side to Todd, and glimpse into his past a bit more then has already been hinted at in earlier episodes. I'm a romantic at heart, so I don't always appreciate certain decision on my favourite shows that deliberately cause trouble for character relationships - splitting up Leo and Piper on " Charmed" is the one that comes to mind. I understand why it was done, and how it moved the characters forward, but at the time, I just remember wanting the two of them back together! Tommy isn't here to be a thorn in the relationship between Damon and Todd, rather he'll help the two realize how perfect they are together. As for Checkmate not being part of his history, it was a necessary compromise with Jack, and honestly, it wasn't needed... for reasons that will become apparent in the next run of episodes. I can't wait till you read Ep 5 all the way to the end!

VSGUIDE EXCLUSIVE:
ALAN RITCHSON & ELENA SATINE CONFIRM UPCOMING APPEARANCES
The First Family of Atlantis is coming to Metropolis! VSGuide has the exclusive reveal that Elena Satine ("The Gifted", "Revenge") will make her return as 'Queen Mera', alongside Alan Ritchson's 'King Orin', in the upcoming 9th episode of the second season of "M:SCU".
Entitled "Trident", the episode will mark a major moment in the shared VPNDCU when the Kingdom of Atlantis finally comes to the negotiating table with the United Nations, and Metropolis, home to so many superheroes, is chosen as the neutral ground for those critical talks. "We've been hinting at the strained relations between Atlantis and the surface world at various moments throughout our run," explains Alex Matthews. "Showing how the reveal of Atlantis has affected the wider world has always been part of the long-term game plan we developed, and this episode really pushes it home, going off the events in earlier episodes and minisodes as a jumping off point."
Viewers may remember that Elena and Alan starred in the minisode "Crown" which showed the critical moment A.C. finally discovered his destiny as future king of the Seven Seas, a destiny he'd already begun to accept in his final "Smallville" appearance, "Patriot". In the minisode, Mera was also heavily pregnant, and "Trident" will showcase the entire royal family, including 'Aquababy'.
"Becoming parents has definitely changed them both. Before the birth, the role of being King and Queen was about being a figurehead for their people, but now they realize that they actually have a child that needs to be raised and nurtured," Matthews told VSGuide. "All the lessons Mera helped A.C. learn to become an effective King are now being used in a more focused way with their own son."

CASTING NEWS:
JOHN DE LANCIE BOOKS GUEST APPEARANCE
VSGuide has the exclusive reveal that John De Lancie, the man behind the omnipotent mischief maker Q of "Star Trek" lore, has booked a guest spot on an upcoming episode!
De Lancie will portray 'Dr. Saul Erdel', based on the DC Comics character of the same name that is a major part of the backstory of the Martian Manhunter. In the original comic lore, Erdel was accidentally responsible for transporting and stranded J'onn J'onzz on Earth, and died shortly after from a heart attack caused by the shock of seeing a real life alien. The backstory has been retconned several times over the long course of DC history, but Erdel has always had some kind of involvement in how and why J'onn took up the mantle of the 'Martian Manhunter'.
He'll be joining previously announced guest star Molly C. Quinn in episode 2x07: "Monster", who previously unrevealed character has been confirmed by sources on set to be called 'Melissa', and she's closely related to the Erdel/Jones story-line.

I'm so behind (but will be catching up this year) but I just wanted to pop in and say that I love the idea behind episode eight, based on the spoilers. I loved "Warrior" (Season 9), which had a comic-con, and I loved "Action" (Season 7) that centered on protecting an actress working in Smallville. So I reckon I'd love this episode Also "Zenya: Warrior Princess." I see you, I see you, haha!

Warrior PRIESTESS, dear... Had to careful of copyright disclaimers..! 😁.
Actually, I owe you a debt on that episode. The original plan was for it to be set at Metropolis Fashion Week with a certain totem-wearing supermodel discovering her family history 😋 You literally revealed your own Vixen appearance just before I was about to email you about the character! But outlining that episode was a joy - there's a scene in the teaser that, if you watch "Criminal Minds" and love a certain moment between Garcia and Spencer in cosplay, will hopefully have you in stitches! 😁
