First Look: Welcome, Chase Winters! As producers strive to plan and reformat the current season of "Trinity," VSGuide was able to land an exclusive interview with series creator and executive producer, Chris Davis, who provided us with a special, first look at one of this season's newest characters; Chase Winters (portrayed by Austin Nichols). With the character in question not yet being introduced on the show, VSGuide representatives gain knowledge on aspects of his personality, style and relationships, as well as official contractual insight, in regards to his capacity as a character on the show.
VSGuide: Tell us about Chase Winters' character. How will he be introduced? What will his overarching storyline be, this season?
Chris Davis: Chase Winters is a first class, son of a bitch. He's unlike any character we've ever seen on this show before, because of his abrasive personality, his unappreciated wit, and his grueling sarcasm, which also makes him one of the funner characters to write for. With showrunner, Jason Davis, and producer Karl Hurd, being behind the conceptual upbringing of his character, he'll be something else, and I think the fans will either love the hell out of him, or hate his guts. Chase [Winters], similar to Jake [Gold's] character in season one, will be introduced as a villain of the story. We'll soon find out that's not the case, but I wanted his character to have a wicked first impression. I wanted him to be a character that's not afraid to speak his mind, and often, without realizing so, utters the worst things possible in possibly the worst situations to utter them in. Bringing your second question into play -- what will his overarching storyline be? Well, I don't want to give that much away, but Chase will be connected to one of the bigger plots this year, and those connections will be only one corner of the larger role that he'll play across the course of this season. In particular, his and Rose Belle's plots are tightly connected to one another.
VSGuide: One thing is unclear about this character -- is he a metahuman, and if so, what are his abilities?
Chris Davis: I can happily reveal at this stage, that Chase [Winters]
is a metahuman. Early in production, that question was, very much, up in the air. While developing his character, the producers were able to see him working well as both a human and metahuman character. But in the end, obviously, we decided to give him a real power, which I'll explain more clearly now -- Chase possesses a skill called 'Hyper Induction,' which is the ability to mentally persuade, or "push" people into doing whatever he verbally asks of them. This power will no doubt come in handy when beating the bad guys, but with Chase's attitude and impulsive personality, it might prove to be just as dangerous to Team Trinity.
VSGuide: Will there be any romance in Mr. Winters' life?
Chris Davis: Chase is probably, no... definitely, the most promiscuous character on Trinity this season, and quite possibly, ever. Let's just say, he gets a lot of play. [laughs] But seriously, you'll find that Chase's romantic entanglements will be either here or there. With his abilities, he has just as much of a chance connecting, romantically, with Lana Lang, as he does with Pete Ross, and judging by his sexuality and extremely flirtatious behaviors, he'll find himself connecting with many of the main and supporting cast members this season -- just can't tell you how far those connections will go, in the end.
VSGuide: Every good character needs a great origin; What are Chase's origins and how will they impact the way he is seen by other supporting characters?
Chris Davis: Like I said before, I don't want to reveal too much, but I can tell you that his origins connect to Rose Belle, as well as Lana Lang. There will be quite a shocking twist in the second half of the season that will explain exactly where, and more importantly, who he comes from.
VSGuide: Chase has been said to be inspired by already existing character, Jake Gold. What do you think about the possible comparisons between the two characters?
Chris Davis: While I will be the first to admit that Chase [Winters] personality has a few nods to Jake's, he is not, and never was directly inspired by the character. I think Chase and Jake are two completely different characters, and hopefully, they'll be looked upon as such when Chase is finally introduced this season. In an alternate reality, where Team Trinity didn't have to worry about saving the city of Odyssey from Checkmate, and crazy, murderous metahumans, Chase Winters and Jake Gold would probably be the best of friends. [laughs]
VSGuide: Are there any real-life/television/film inspirations, in regards to Chase's character?
Chris Davis: As a matter of fact, there are. I like to say, in my head, that Chase's character can be described as a extreme cross between a manlier, more sarcastic and witty version of Anya (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and again, a manlier version of Katherine Pierce (The Vampire Diaries). Chase relates to Anya, because he doesn't quite know what he can and cannot say, due to lack of training, or quite possibly, lack of caring, which can also be said about his other inspiration, Katherine. But that is only my take on his character. [laughs]
VSGuide: Final question -- are you allowed to go into Austin Nichols' contract for the show? If so, how long will we be seeing his character?
Chris Davis: Austin has been contracted for two years, so if Trinity is renewed for a third season, he will be making an appearance. The amount of episode Chase will appear in, this season, has been set for 12-13, and he will be added to the main cast after his introductory episode.
